Thomas Cole was an American landscape painter who is considered to be the founder of the Hudson River School. He was known for his idyllic paintings of the American wilderness, which often included allegorical and religious symbolism. Cole's work was highly influential in the development of American art, and his paintings are still admired for their beauty and their ability to evoke a sense of the sublime.

Cole was born in England in 1801, but he emigrated to the United States in 1819. He settled in New York City, where he worked as an engraver and a drawing teacher. In 1825, he traveled to the Catskill Mountains, where he was inspired by the beauty of the landscape. He began to paint landscapes in the style of the Hudson River School, which emphasized the grandeur and beauty of the American wilderness.

Cole's paintings are characterized by their rich colors, their careful attention to detail, and their allegorical and religious symbolism. He often used his paintings to express his own personal beliefs about the relationship between humans and nature. For example, his painting "View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm—The Oxbow" (1836) shows a group of people looking out over a valley after a storm. The painting is a metaphor for the power of nature and the fragility of human life.

Cole's work was highly influential in the development of American art. He was one of the first American artists to paint landscapes in a realistic style, and his paintings helped to establish the Hudson River School as a major force in American art. Cole's work is still admired today for its beauty and its ability to evoke a sense of the sublime.
