Broadway Balanchine and Beyond Memoir by Judith Jamison is a captivating and deeply personal account of her extraordinary journey as a dancer and choreographer. The memoir offers an intimate glimpse into the world of dance, from the rigorous training at the School of American Ballet to the exhilaration of performing on Broadway and the international stage.

Judith Jamison's Early Years

Jamison was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1943. She began taking dance classes at a young age and quickly discovered her passion for movement. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York City to study at the School of American Ballet.

At the School of American Ballet, Jamison trained under the legendary teacher George Balanchine. Balanchine was a visionary choreographer who revolutionized the world of ballet. He believed that dancers should be athletic and expressive, and he pushed Jamison to develop her technique and artistry.

Broadway and Beyond

After graduating from the School of American Ballet, Jamison joined the New York City Ballet. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a principal dancer in 1965. She performed in many of Balanchine's most famous ballets, including "Serenade," "The Nutcracker," and "Agon."

In addition to her work with the New York City Ballet, Jamison also performed on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in the musical "Hair" in 1968. She went on to star in other Broadway musicals, including "Pippin" and "Chicago."

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

In 1984, Jamison joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Ailey was a pioneering choreographer who celebrated the African-American experience through dance. Jamison became a principal dancer with the company and performed in many of Ailey's most iconic works, including "Revelations" and "Cry."

Jamison danced with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for over a decade. During that time, she toured the world and helped to bring Ailey's choreography to a global audience.

Artistic Director of The Philadanco

In 1995, Jamison retired from dancing and became the artistic director of The Philadanco. The Philadanco is a Philadelphia-based dance company that celebrates the African-American experience. Jamison led the company for over a decade, creating new works and touring the world.

Under Jamison's leadership, The Philadanco became one of the most respected dance companies in the United States. The company has performed on Broadway, at the Kennedy Center, and at other prestigious venues around the world.
