1. The Journal of Captain James Cook's Third Voyage (1776-1780)

James Cook's third voyage was his most ambitious and far-reaching. He set out from England in 1776 with the goal of finding the Northwest Passage, a mythical waterway that was believed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Cook sailed across the Pacific Ocean, explored the coasts of North America and Asia, and even crossed the Arctic Circle. Although he ultimately failed to find the Northwest Passage, Cook's voyage was a major success. He made important discoveries about the geography of the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic, and he also collected a wealth of scientific data.

2. The Journal of Midshipman David Porter (1812-1814)

David Porter was a midshipman on the USS Essex, a frigate that was sent to the Pacific Ocean during the War of 1812. The Essex was captured by the British in 1814, and Porter was taken prisoner. He spent the rest of the war in prison, but he kept a detailed journal of his experiences. Porter's journal provides a firsthand account of the War of 1812 from the perspective of a young American sailor.

The expedition's goal was to explore the Pacific Ocean and the Antarctic continent. Wilkes and his crew spent four years exploring the Pacific, and they made important discoveries about the geography of the region. They also collected a wealth of scientific data, and they brought back to the United States a large collection of specimens.
