When we decided to move our family to South America, we were excited for the adventure. We had no idea that we would end up piranha fishing in thong bikinis, but that's just one of the many unexpected things that happened to us during our time abroad.

We moved to Ecuador when our kids were 5 and 7 years old. We had always dreamed of living in a foreign country, and we thought that Ecuador would be a great place to start. We were right. Ecuador is a beautiful country with friendly people and a rich culture. We quickly fell in love with our new home.

Of course, there were some challenges as well. One of the biggest challenges was learning how to parent in a new culture. In Ecuador, children are much more independent than they are in the United States. They are expected to help out around the house and to take care of themselves. This was a big adjustment for our kids, but they eventually got used to it.

Another challenge was the language barrier. We only spoke a little bit of Spanish when we moved to Ecuador, and our kids didn't speak any at all. This made it difficult to communicate with our neighbors and to help our kids with their schoolwork. We eventually learned enough Spanish to get by, but it was a slow process.

Despite the challenges, we had an amazing time living in Ecuador. We made lifelong friends, our kids learned a lot about a different culture, and we had some incredible adventures. Here are a few of our favorite stories:

The time we went piranha fishing in thong bikinis

One day, we were invited to go piranha fishing with some friends. We had never been piranha fishing before, but we were up for the challenge. We put on our bathing suits and headed to the river.

When we got to the river, we saw that our friends were all wearing thong bikinis. We were a little surprised, but we didn't want to be the only ones not wearing them. So, we took off our bathing suits and put on thong bikinis too.

We then got into the river and started fishing. We didn't catch any piranhas, but we had a lot of fun trying. We also got a lot of strange looks from the other people on the river.

The time our kids got lost in the jungle

Another time, we took our kids on a hike in the jungle. We were all having a great time until our kids wandered off the trail. We called for them, but they didn't answer. We started to panic.

We searched for our kids for hours, but we couldn't find them. We were about to give up when we heard a noise in the bushes. We called out to our kids, and they answered. We were so relieved to find them!

Our kids had gotten lost, but they had found their way back to the trail. They were a little scared, but they were okay.

The time we learned to salsa

One of the things we loved most about living in Ecuador was the music. We went to salsa clubs every week, and we learned to dance salsa. We weren't very good at first, but we had a lot of fun.

We eventually got pretty good at salsa, and we even performed at a local salsa competition. We didn't win, but we had a great time.

These are just a few of the many adventures and misadventures we had while living abroad. We learned a lot about ourselves and about the world. We also made some lifelong memories.

If you're thinking about moving abroad with your family, I encourage you to do it. It's an amazing experience. Just be prepared for some unexpected adventures along the way.
